This is the second installment of BYOM’s recently launched “You’re Cool” series, in which we highlight the work and accomplishments of emerging voices and talents. This week, we’re featuring the amazing Beats1 DJ Julie Adenuga. Tune in!
Julie Adenuga is one of the freshest and most interesting voices in music. These days, she’s one of the three creative leads behind Apple Music’s new radio station, Beats 1. Her partners? World-renowned DJs Ebro Darden (from NYC’s Hot 97) and Zane Lowe (from the BBC).
While she’s relatively new to DJing – she just began a few years ago on the pirate-turned-legit XM Station Rinse FM – she’s already established herself as a major tastemaker across genres. With roots in grime, but appreciation for all genres, her radio show is an eclectic mix of hip-hop, house, alternative and reggae.
We could tell you all about how she got her start, the rest of her incredibly talented family, and how she got tapped as a mastermind for Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio, but The Fader already did an excellent job. (When you finish listening to the incredible tracks below, check it out.)
This rising star is known for combining approachability and enthusiasm with truly incredible music taste. We love the way that we feel like we know her – she fully embraces her personality! When she talks about new artists, you really hear the passion in her voice, and it’s entirely unpretentious. Tune in and see what we mean.
In her spirit of appreciation and sharing, here are five of our favorite tracks she’s shared this week:
